FCDP Absenteeism Study - The effect of the GCC on absenteeism and cost savings

FCDP

The cost of sedentary lifestyle is not only measured in the escalating morbidity and mortality statistics from around the world. The productivity of every organization suffers as well. One of the factors that has been studied in relation to the GCC is absenteeism - time lost due to illness in the workforce.

A 6-month study by associate professor David Cameron Smith from the Heart Disease and Diabetes Prevention Centre (HDDP) showed exactly what the cost is and more importantly how much money is saved when an organization enrolls staff in the GCC.

The Australian study showed:

  • Overall - Non GCC participants took 41% more sick days than GCC participants.
  • GCC participating employees each took an average 2.3 less sick days than their non-participating colleagues in the 2 months and 12 days of the study.
  • The potential cost savings (in USD) of the 23,356 employees involved in the GCC 2007 was 53,952 less sick days, at a significant cost saving of $7.5m, which equates to an ROI of $3.26 for every $1 spent on employees.
