Sustainability Victoria - The effect of the GCC on the environment
Sustainability Victoria is a government agency of the Victorian Government, Australia. Since 2007, they have been measuring the effect of the GCC on our environment each year. The study particularly looks at how an increase in walking is measure in carbon abatement terms and a reduced dependency on fossil-fueled transportation.
Generalizing the average weekly abatement of the entire GCC 2010 resulted in an estimated greenhouse gas abatement of 3 500 tonnes. This is roughly equivalent to taking 1 150 cars off the road for a year or eliminating the equivalent of 70 million balloons full of greenhouse gas. It clearly shows that while the GCC is repeatedly proven to be good for a participants' health and an organizations' productivity, it is also great for the environment as well.
Other findings of the studies:
- Walking increased during the Challenge by approximately 331%
- Cycling increased during the Challenge by approximately 188%
- Driving decreased during the Challenge by approximately 74%
- Riding motorcycles decreased during the Challenge by approximately 61%
- Travel by public transport decreased during the Challenge by an average of 64%
