  • When will teams receive their starter packs?Once teams have been paid for and confirmed the team captain s delivery details will be transferred onto our distribution lists. Distribution takes place within the few weeks before the event start to ensure all teams have their starter packs before the challenge begins. The team captain will receive a notification email from our distribution partners to let them know that their pack has been dispatched. If teams register late we cannot guarantee they will receive their packs before the start of the event.
  • What activities can I wear my pedometer for?You are advised to wear your pedometer at all times from when you get up to when you go to bed. This way it will capture all of your incidental steps throughout the day. If you are taking part in an activity where it is safe to wear your pedometer then do so. This can include aerobics non-contact sports and even cleaning the house! Just make sure you re keeping your pedometer safe so don t expose it to any water.

If you are taking part in an activity where you cannot wear your pedometer such as water-skiing or Greco-roman wrestling then you cannot allocate yourself steps. Just make sure you walk back from your Greco-roman wrestling class to keep your steps up.

  • How do I wear the GCC pedometer?Do

    • Press reset button to display 00000
    • Start to walk run or jog. The pedometer will record each step
    • Enter your steps every 24 hours (for the previous day) on the GCC website

    Don't
    • Wear 2 pedometers. Only one GCC pedometer can be worn at any one time.
    • Attach your pedometer anywhere else apart from your hip

  • How accurate are the GCC pedometers? The Global Corporate Challenge® 2012 pedometer is a product of eight long years of extensive research development and rigorous testing. Due to the fact that no other pedometer program and hence no other pedometer is used as demandingly as the GCC pedometer each year we gain a better understanding of how our pedometers perform in the field which is the GCC.

The 2012 GCC pedometer has been designed and engineered by 10 specific pedometer engineers and perfected through grueling laboratory testing. The GCC pedometer is one of the hardest working in the world and it needs to be able to deliver accurate readings while also withstanding the rigors of daily use over the 111-day period of the event. We have tested our 2012 pedometers to ensure they are accurate to within a 5% range and are confident that your pedometers can stand up to the test of the challenge.

Even though we are confident with the 2012 pedometer s accuracy there are various factors that can affect the reading. Everyone has unique walking characteristics such as stride and gait which can affect your step count and make it differ to someone else s reading. Even if you walk the same route as someone else it is not uncommon to see up to a 20% difference in total steps taken. Not only that but where you place your pedometer and even the clothes you wear can influence the reading.

If you are concerned about your pedometer s accuracy and think it might be a good idea to wear both of your pedometers at once to see if they match up then don t! The difference between two pedometers one on each hip can vary up to 19% so do not try and wear both pedometers at once to calibrate them.

  • Do you offer step conversions for other activities? We offer a conversion for swimming and cycling so you don t need to wear your pedometer whilst participating in these sports. This means you can convert the time spent doing these activities into steps to be counted as part of your daily total.

We do not offer any other conversions aside from swimming and cycling so if you are taking part in an activity where you cannot wear your pedometer (contact or water sports) then you cannot self allocate steps and we can t calculate a conversion for you.

One of the main constructs of the GCC is to get busy working people to become more 'incidentally active . Essentially this means we want busy working people to be more active during their working day as this is where research has shown people may sit for 6-8 hours and potentiate chronic disease. All exercise is great but don't look at it as 'missing steps you deserve' but as an overall increase in your activity levels.

  • Are there other ways to enter a step count? We recommend that participants enter their step counts daily so that individual data and team statistics are a true representation of their achievements. As well as the event site we offer mobile phone step entry options:
    • iPhone app a simplified streamlined version of the Event Site for those participants who are on the move or unable to get to a computer to access the site. The app features step entry and leader board functions and location descriptions and comes in the form of a slick and easily downloaded app from the iTunes Store.
    • Android app for those participants who do not have an iPhone we offer an Android App through the Android Marketplace. This version offers the same functionality as the iPhone app with step entry and leader board functions and location descriptions.
    • All other mobile users will be able to experience a specially designed mobile version of the Event site complete with step entry location information leader board Averages and Community through any web-enabled mobile device.
    • *Please note the GCC will not be supporting SMS step entry for 2012.
  • Can a participant who uses a wheelchair or who has limited mobility take part? As the GCC prides itself on being an event that everyone can be involved participants who use a wheelchair or have limited mobility can join in the fun of the GCC.

If you are a wheelchair bound participant we recommend that you fit an odometer to your wheel and use the following equation - 1 meter equals three steps. If you are unable to utilize an odometer on your wheelchair and use the above step conversion please contact the GCC for further information and clarification on how to record steps.

We encourage participants with restricted mobility to join their fellow teammates and wear a GCC pedometer. With this year s new feature of being able to set your own personal target participants can set individual goals that are achievable for them.
